United by a shared beginning in school guitar clubs, the members of Twinkle later met as classmates at a music academy—as if guided by fate. It was there that their guitar ensemble naturally began to take shape. The world of ensembles, bands, and musical groups is not one in which friendship alone is enough to ensure longevity. Yet Twinkle has continued to surpass expectations, building an impressive record of achievements along the way. The world of guitar ensembles employing instruments of different registers remains relatively little known and largely unexplored. Yet this also means that it is an exceptionally creative field—one filled with possibilities still waiting to be discovered.
Having remained together with the same members for more than two decades, they have overcome countless challenges along the way. Through those years, they have developed a deep bond, an instinctive sense of balance, and a delicate yet supple sound—qualities that could only have been forged through such a long shared journey. Perhaps it is this unique combination that continues to captivate audiences and has led to repeated invitations to perform globally.
The sound of the classical guitar is remarkably pure and beautiful—at times passionate, at times fragile, yet always capable of touching the heart. As an acoustic instrument, it can vividly reflect the emotions and inner world of the performer. At the same time, it carries within it the living breath of a plucked-string tradition that has accompanied people throughout their daily lives, across countless eras, countries, and cultures. In the hands of a musician, the guitar becomes almost like a magic wand—an instrument capable of revealing and amplifying the unique character of the person who plays it.
In exchange for the instrument’s inherent limitations—its modest volume, limited range, and intimate scale—lies a world of infinite simplicity and delicacy. Just as the great maestros of the classical guitar devoted their lives to searching, questioning, and striving to uncover true artistry within this instrument, Twinkle continues on its own journey, exploring new artistic possibilities in guitar music.
When first introduced, Niibori’s original instruments—the alto guitar, bass guitar, and guitarrón—were not yet widely recognized as instruments capable of serious artistic expression. Yet through the dedication of those who came before, and through the hands of musicians who have inherited, refined, and carried forward that legacy, these instruments are steadily being elevated into a new realm of artistry.
Today, Japan is home to a large number of amateur guitar orchestras. Guitar ensembles have become increasingly popular among junior high, high school, and university students, growing alongside popular music clubs and wind bands. Within schools and universities, classical guitar in particular has been experiencing something of a “quiet boom.” Guitar orchestras also flourish beyond student activities, bringing together adults of all ages, from young professionals to retirees, and providing valuable communities where people can connect through music — something increasingly meaningful in contemporary Japanese society.
As one of the leading ensembles in this field, Twinkle stands out for its extensive original repertoire written specifically for this unique combination of guitars. In recent years, this form of guitar ensemble has also attracted growing interest overseas, where musicians are actively exploring its distinctive possibilities with an enthusiasm that seems almost determined to catch up with(and even surpass)Japan. As a result, Twinkle continues to receive invitations from abroad for both performances and educational activities.
